On the scale of greatness, Gen Con event can be compared with Comic-Con, for tabletop game fans. Instead of San Diego, every year card games lovers come to Indianapolis to see the new games, upcoming releases, meet company developers, try demo versions. This year was one of the best and revealed a lot of games that soon will be legendary.
There are hundreds of projects from well-known and beloved companies. All you have to do now is be patient and wait for new games. It is hard to sum up all that I saw and heard during the convention, but I’ll try to make a detailed list of the top games discussed during the Gen Con.
Hundreds of Games
Some of the names of the games on the list are probably well-known to you since they are expected since long. But many will be a nice discovery and a way to spend your evenings in the new year. You will learn about role-playing, board, card, and miniature games.
Horrified is a spooky game from Ravensburger, perfect for Halloween night. It became a sensation at Gen Con, and in my humble opinion, it has all the chances to top table game charts in the future. I bet we will hear much more about Horrified in the next few months. The first impression of this game’s demo was really good.
Miniatures for the game are outstanding. The board is colorful and intriguing. The game is cooperative and possibly takes some time to win it. Players have to keep the famous fiction monsters: the Invisible Man, Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, far from them by going through the numerous challenges. Players can control the level of difficulty by adding or taking away monsters.
Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North
The Empires of the North game was created by Portal Games and is one of the Imperial Settlers series. This means that the concept of the game may be slightly familiar to you. Still, it has lots of differences from other games in series. For starters, there is no building the deck mechanics. Instead, it has a focus on clans’ static progress. There are Inuits, Scotsmen, and Vikings.
Players have to develop a civilization and build an empire in the end. The resources you have at the beginning must be doubled and continue to grow steadily. There is a chance for you to show your strategic skills. You have to decide where to go and what resources to gather.
Unmatched: Battle of Legends
Unmatched: Battle of Legends was made by the Restoration Games company, which actually keeps returning to the roots. They take old but popular games from the past and adjust them to a completely new level until they become hardly recognizable. Their last achievement is Star Wars: Epic Duels. The company rebuilt it and refreshed.
Battle of Legends allows players to become the legendary heroes and take part in the competition. This is a mix of card games, board games, and miniature games. You can play as Medusa or Sinbad or King Arthur, etc. These characters will fight against each other, following a few simple rules. There are going to be more characters and extra additions. Children will have fun playing the game as well.
Machi Koro Legacy
Machi Koro Legacy is made by Pandasaurus Games. It is a new edition of the well-known game. Classic Machi Koro still has numerous fans who love to build a fortune using their strategic skills. We all know the gameplay of Machi Koro. However, don’t expect to see the same old game in the Legacy edition.
The beginning is almost the same, as there is an original game in the core. But instead of simply collecting the money from building landmarks appreciated in the town, you receive 10 different sessions with numerous features that are changing during the game. Don’t worry, the one who receives the highest income still wins in the end.
Funkoverse Strategy Game
The game is made by Funko Games and is a new and previously unseen project. It contains unique Funko figures and rollout models. There are 2 and 4 sets of characters that are matchable. You can choose yourself whether you want to play with Harry Potter universe characters or Rick & Morty. If you are a fan of Funko Pops, you’ll love it.
Basically, you’ll receive the figures of your favorite characters and the game, you can play with them. The board in the game is double-sided, and it is up to you which one to choose. Use the ability tokens to make it through the game. However, the more power in the ability you use, the longer it will cool down. You have to plan your attacks and their outcome beforehand. There are unique figures in the game, which is good news for collectors. The full release is promised to be at the end of the year.
Terror Below is a creation of Renegade Game Studios, so you can already expect amazing graphics. But there is much more. Do you remember a movie back in the 1990s, named Tremors? Well, I am sure that everyone watched it. The movie is a classic, and if you have not yet seen the giant warm-looking monsters crawling under your feet, you must definitely do it.
It looks like monsters that stayed under the ground want to come back again. Like the movie before it, the game contains a good dose of dark humor, lots of action, and bits of horror. And of course, it all happens in a sweet old tiny southwest town. So put your jeans on and your cowboy hat, and don’t forget to take your gun with you.
This game officially does not repeat the movie and is not based on it. However, it is pretty close to it. Players will be moved across the Nevada desert, gathering eggs of monsters and receiving points for it. But remember that you have to move slowly to not attract monsters under the surface. It is up to you whether you are ready to fight these creatures and then you can move as fast as you need, or try not to get caught by them.
Cloudspire is made by Chip Theory Games and, apparently, was inspired by the worlds of video games in the MOBA genre. There may be up to four players, but unlike with other games, even one player can play it. This game was originally presented during the Gen Con, and it was a huge surprise for everyone. Still, developers promise an outstanding game.
Players will take one fraction under control and send them to steal resources from other players. When you steal something from others, don’t forget to watch your own territories as somebody can steal from you at the same time. The game has high replay value, as it changes simultaneously while you are playing.
Ishtar: Gardens of Babylon
Made by Iello, Ishtar: Gardens of Babylon is an incredibly beautiful game with a deep meaning behind the plot. You become the gardener who hopes to turn the desert into legendary hanging gardens of Babylon. You have to fill the desert with flowers and trees, trying to reanimate it.
Your main goal is to please the queen of Babylon by giving her the most beautiful garden she has ever seen. To do this, you must be better than your opponents, so you can sabotage their efforts. Upgrade the garden as much as possible and receive points. There is high quality in every component of the game. If you like amazing aesthetic in games, you have to take a look at this one.
Dune was reanimated by Gale Force Nine. The first Dune tabletop game was released back in 1979. Everyone knows this game. And now it received a remake. It contains foundational elements of the classic Dune but has improved the art and added new rules.
You receive one of the main fraction in the game, like Atreides, the sisterhood of Bene Gesserit, etc. Now you have to lead them and take the planet Arakkis under your control. Beware! This biggest Dune’s galaxy attracts everyone. The game will come out closer to other revivals of Dune’s franchise like the film from Denis Villeneuve.
God of War: The Card Game
We all know God of War as a video game that was released back in 2018. This year, the card game with the same name will see the world. It was made by CMON Company and shows the same characters we saw in the video version.
You take under your control one of the characters, like Freya, Atreus or Kratos on their journey to the Ragnarok. The board is unique and card-based, which makes every session different. There are numerous quests that make the game even more interesting. Players can also decide which character will have benefits from the powers or effects in the game. Basically, developers took all the appealing parts of the game and put it inside the tabletop game.
Which Game to Wait?
I, myself, am waiting for all of the games. I already began to gather the money for buying each item on the list, and I believe many of you do the same. What games are you waiting for the most? You can name games that are not on this list.
